Afghan Hounds

The Afghan Hound is a beautiful dog with long flowing coat. The Afghan name comes from their original ancestral home of the cold mountains of Afghanistan. They were bred to be hunting dogs and are known to have keen eyesight to aid them in identifying prey from long distances and that coupled with their high speed make them very skilled hunters.

Afghans are often noted as being a tad aloof and strong minded when it comes to learning to obey orders (or deciding whether they want to acknowledge hearing the orders).

The Afghans long flowing coat requires attention to maintain with proper brushing, and owners often choose to shave their afghans in the warm summer months to aid in maintenance and for more comfort for the dog.

Afghan hounds have an interesting distinction of being considered as an ancient breed of dog, which means that they are more closely related to the common ancestry of wolves than most breeds, and is considered to date back thousands of years.
